As you may know, when I’m not blogging or mothering I’m a freelance journalist.
I’m currently writing a magazine article about how to get kids who love video games, to love reading as well.
One of the ways to do this is to use technology, that has a literacy component, to interest them.

Joyce, have you had a chance to look at http://www.reading-rewards.com yet? It is exactly why it was designed in the first place (to get my video-loving boys reading!).
There is a mini-game component where they can play games against their friends, but only if they read (they log reading time, parents validate, which then earns them privileges to advance in the games). It's a Web 2.0 environment which the kids really like, and it works! Feedback from users has been amazing. Let me know if you have any questions, the site is completely free and safe, and made in Canada! 🙂

Great, Michelle! I've checked out your blogs, too, you look like you must be super-busy! I love your book idea, what a great topic. Let me know what you think of Reading Rewards, too! Who knows, you may end up with a chapter in your book about reading incentive programs (there are a few, out there), and their effectiveness. Opinions vary, I think it depends on how you set things up. Good luck!
