While You Sleep: A cozy, lyrical read-aloud

If you’re familiar with this blog, you know that we strongly urge every parent to read to their child every day. It’s far and away the one thing that is mostly likely to turn your kid into a lifelong reader.

While You Sleep is a new picture book by Canadian author Jennifer Maruno (illustrated by Miki Sato). Its sweet, lilting rhymes make the perfect read-aloud for any time—but especially bedtime.

“The woven night of black and gray
Embroidered with a Milky Way.”

Each double-page spread describes what happens while we’re asleep. How clouds are sewn into the sky and rainbows are recharged “to keep their glow,” and stars are swept like dust.

Soft, rich mixed-media collages beautifully illustrate each fanciful concept.

You won’t have to work hard to make the book sound as good as it looks as you read it to your favourite child. The rhyming couplets easily drip from the pages in a way that is comforting and soothing.

The whole effect is cozy and cuddly (think Goodnight Moon) and your little reader is bound to fall asleep by the time you reach the final sentence.
